Gavin Newsom says Donald Trump's DOJ is "targeting" him and his wife — but even CNN couldn't back up his story. In a five-minute video, the California governor accused Trump of weaponizing the Justice Department against him. There's just one problem: the facts say otherwise.
According to reporting from CNN, Semafor, and Axios, there is no federal investigation directly into Gavin Newsom. The probes are being run out of Sacramento — not Trump's DOJ in Washington — and they trace back to whistleblower complaints filed last year, focused on his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom's taxes and his former chief of staff, who has already pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return. Several of these tax and campaign finance investigations reportedly began under Joe Biden, long before this administration.
