It is pointless to try to identify precise sources for titles such as Voiles (the danseuse Loïe Fuller?), Des pas sur la neige, Brouillards, Bruyères or Feux d’artifice in Book 2 of the Préludes. For some, Debussy noted ideas for titles in his notebooks; he had also intended to write Paganini (dans la technique du violon) for Book 2, but discarded this idea in the end. However, most of the titles, apart from Les tierces alternées in Book 2, derive from literary impressions, recollections or even familiar objects. It is even possible that many of the pieces were only given titles after they had been composed. Certain anecdotal statements which were made after his death should be mistrusted even if they originate from Marguerite Long or Alfred Cortot.
The following titles may be accounted for with some certainty: I. Danseuses de Delphes evokes three Bacchantes atop a column displayed in the Louvre. – III. Le vent dans la plaine is the opening of an ariette from Favart’s comic opera Ninette à la cour, which is used as a motto in Verlaine’s poem C’est l’extase langoureuse (the first song (1887) in Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées). – IV. «Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir» is the third verse of Baudelaire’s Harmonie du soir (the second song, 1889, in Debussy’s Cinq poèmes de Baudelaire). – VII. Ce qu’a vu le vent d’ouest probably comes from a French translation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale Le jardin du paradis (Paris, 1907). – VIII. La fille aux cheveux de lin is one of the Poèmes antiques by Leconte de Lisle that Debussy had set as a song for Madame Vasnier in 1882. – X. La cathédrale engloutie refers to the old Breton legend of the town of Ys, which sank into the sea. – XI. La danse de Puck evokes Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (Act 2, Scene 1), most likely through the medium of Arthur Rackham’s illustrations.
Thus, these twelve pieces conjure up an atmosphere of England, Spain (La sérénade interrompue) and Naples (Les collines d’Anacapri) as well as the Ancient World and Nordic legend. »
