Piano Sonata No. 5, Op. 10, No. 1 // Radiofrance: "This sonata returns to the classical three-movement structure. Like Sonata No. 1, it shares the choice of a minor key and bears certain similarities to Mozart’s Sonata in C minor, K. 457. Its character, however, is more aggressive and combative, its expression more impassioned and theatrical. Beethoven draws a sharp contrast between the forceful, rhythmically driven motifs of the first theme and the cantabile melody of the second theme, still influenced by Mozart. In the development section, particular note should be made of the introduction of a new idea in F minor: ultimately, it is this melody, accompanied by a figure derived from the second theme, that chiefly sustains this part of the movement.

In the Adagio, Beethoven borrows elegant ornamental flourishes from the decorative style of his time. While the contrasts in dynamics and the density of certain textures reveal his distinctive voice, this movement is fundamentally grounded in the expressiveness of song, which fades into silence at the end of a long decrescendo and a descent into the lower register.

Prestissimo, like the finale of Sonata No. 1, the final movement begins with an anxious agitation that gradually intensifies into a stormy outburst. Yet the second thematic group introduces a playful and more relaxed tone, not without explosive gestures (fortissimo chords and tremolos). Intense but very brief, the development section resembles almost a transition between the exposition and recapitulation. In the final part of the finale, the second theme area is heard in C major, providing a moment of brightness characteristic of the classical style. However, the harmonic progressions of the final measures instead create a sense of suspension. In place of the triumphant conclusion one might have expected, Beethoven substitutes this unusual and ambiguous ending."
