As with most of his symphonies, Mahler composed Das Lied von der Erde after reading poems. Few composers reacted to the poetic stimulus with the promptness of mind and openness of heart that Mahler displayed. In the case of "Das Lied von der Erde", Mahler came across a collection of Chinese poems adapted by Hans Bethge entitled "Die chinesische Flöte" (The Chinese Flute).
Among them were verses from what is perhaps the greatest of all Chinese poets, Li-Tai-Po. Mahler was immediately captivated by their exquisite imagery and wisdom matured by experience, even more so by man's preoccupation with the decline of his existence with the evanescence of life.
For there, in poems from distant China in the eighth century, Mahler found the perfect reflection of his state of mind; on the one hand, an inexhaustible declaration of the beauties of nature, combined with a deep desire to live; on the other, a persistent foreboding of death and mourning.
In the six poems he chose, Mahler found the material for a colossal picture of man's precarious stay on earth. These poetic soliloquies (when a character alone relates his thoughts/feelings aloud in front of the audience) by a tenor and a contralto are among the greatest songs ever composed. Through the breadth and intensity of the opposing moods they depict, they achieve a powerful truth of expression that is unique in its kind.
Mahler the lyric poet poured over these songs his extraordinary gifts for relevant and evocative melodies. And what a wonderful orchestral texture envelops them! Mahler the symphonist attained a noble goal and performance with unlimited resources and complete mastery.
