Jessica Duchen: « Fauré’s Barcarolles (literally “boatmen’s songs”) appear to be the only substantial collection of works ever composed in this genre. Chopin left only a single example, Offenbach another (in his opera The Tales of Hoffmann), and Mendelssohn three Venetian Gondola Songs. Yet the genre serves merely as a point of departure.
For all their diversity, the Barcarolles are unified by Fauré’s ingenious pianistic writing. Apparently ambidextrous, he displays here a mastery of keyboard textures at its highest level. There are also traces of his gifts as an organist: he often writes as though addressing three keyboards, with melodies in the tenor register and accompanying figures or secondary voices spread both above and below.
The Barcarolle No. 1 in A minor is a perfect example of a tenor-register song supported by a multi-layered accompaniment. The simple melody becomes increasingly inventive; the central section introduces subtle rhythmic displacements and cascades of arpeggios before the return of the main theme. It was first performed in 1882 by Saint-Saëns.
The Second Barcarolle in G major, roughly contemporary with Fauré’s vibrant Piano Quartet No. 2, clearly reveals the influence of Saint-Saëns and Liszt in its questioning harmonic and textural world. Wagner’s influence on Fauré was relatively limited, yet this important work becomes almost Tristanesque through its continual unresolved modulations.
Within just a few pages, the Barcarolle No. 3 in G-flat major moves from an opening more complex than it first appears into deeper musical waters, glittering with fantastical ornamentation. The entire piece seems to belong to the realm of improvisational magic, its stream of ideas unfolding almost through free association. (...) »
