THE SYMPHONIC SUITES
In 1936, after his contract with the Bolshoi Theatre was terminated, Prokofiev reworked the score of his ballet Romeo and Juliet to create two suites for symphony orchestra in seven movements, Op. 64bis and Op. 64ter, as well as a piano transcription, so that the music could be performed in concert if not as ballet music. He later composed a third suite in 1944 (Op. 101).
On 19 December 1936, Albert Wolff conducted the first suite from Romeo and Juliet in Paris, while in 1937—a relatively unproductive year for Prokofiev from a creative standpoint—the composer himself conducted the world premiere of his Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2 in Leningrad.
The symphonic suites assembled by Prokofiev draw on individual numbers from the ballet, rearranged into a new order, or combine several scenes into a single movement. In concert performance, conductors are free to select individual numbers from these excerpts or to create new combinations of their own.
The symphonic suites compiled by Prokofiev are true programmatic suites. The first gathers together the most lyrical scenes from the score, the second presents passages of greater psychological depth, and the third consists of several numbers that are less obviously popular.
