A prodigiously imaginative discourse, perfectly unified yet teeming with a multiplicity of figures, the Chaconne is one of the supreme peaks of Bach’s entire output, a summit of complexity of style, of technical difficulty, but also of searing humanity, an immense grief-stricken cry whose meaning escape us. The struggle of spirit against matter, the struggle of Jacob with the Angel of the Lord, the struggle of Bach the man with himself, the mad desire to reach an ideal.. Soli Deo gloria .
The Chaconne is a journey, just like the Goldberg Variations. It is a spiritual journey into the heart of Bach's thought, one that not only reveals the extraordinary depth of his intellect (if anyone still doubted it!), but also leads us to the highest summits, where eternity seems almost within reach. Without denying his human condition, but rather embracing it fully, Bach once again invites us to share his vision of the world. Tragic in its earthly essence, his music nevertheless aspires to raise us toward that heavenly vision upon which each listener, according to their own spiritual beliefs, will place a different name. Therein lies the universality of his message. Although Bach was a devoted and deeply committed Lutheran, his music transcends confessional boundaries, expressing a spirituality that each of us may interpret in our own way.
