Woodturning Apple Burl Into a Stunning Catalytic Fragrance Lamp

Matt Jordan Video 7 months ago

Description

I started with what looked like a rotten apple burl that most people would have thrown in the fire pile. Instead, I turned it into a functional catalytic fragrance lamp using a mix of traditional woodturning, resin casting and a CNC-machined aluminium top.

The body is made from Apple wood and turquoise resin, turned on the lathe and finished with Danish Oil to bring out the figure and the colour shift in the resin. The aluminium top was first machined on the Makera Carvera CNC, then finished and refined on the metal lathe before being sanded and polished.

These lamps work using a catalytic alcohol burner system rather than a flame, so the result is a clean, efficient fragrance diffuser with a handmade feel and a bit of engineering behind it.

If you enjoy woodturning, CNC projects, resin work or just watching something ugly turn into something worth keeping, this might be your kind of video.
