Why This Slab Has None

Odell Complete Concrete Video 11 days ago

Description

No rebar. No wire mesh. Eleven yards of straight 3,000 PSI big-rock concrete in front of Bo's garage, and David says that's exactly right for this slab.

Out here there's no freeze-thaw, about five inches of rain a year and no earthquakes, and the slab sits on a good base. David explains why that lets them skip the steel, and there's one thing in the mix you won't see until the broom hits it (watch for it at 10:33). Along the way: why 11 yards on one truck beats 10 plus a cleanup load, the vibratory bull float that replaces a jitterbug and a roller tamp, why you never build your edges up into a dam, and why every garage needs a slab out front. The pour starts at 5 AM, because by 9 it's 110 degrees in the Arizona desert.

ON THIS JOB
- No rebar or wire mesh: 3,000 PSI big-rock mix with fiber mesh and 1% retarder, on a good base
- Why it works here: no freeze-thaw, about 5" of rain a year, no earthquakes
- 11 yards on one truck, the most they can haul out here because of road weight limits
- 5 AM start under a Milwaukee light tower, with a diesel generator for backup power
- M-B-W vibratory bull float adapter (with LED lights) on a 5 ft fiberglass bull float
- Edges left at slab height so water runs off instead of being dammed
- Fresno and funny trowel passes, broom finish, curing compound
- Same-day saw cuts with the SKILSAW Medusaw
