Why My Garage Was a Disaster Zone

Homeowner Repair Review 13 days ago

Description

It's garage cleaning day, and my garage is a total disaster zone. In this behind-the-scenes talk video from Homeowner Repair, I show you how my garage got out of control in about eight months. It was pretty clean last spring, then boat season and camping season started, I brought the boat home, did some boat videos and some repairs on the house, and it all just snowballed on me.

It's fall here in New England, and when you have an old 1959 house like I do, the window air conditioners come out and have to get lugged up and down the stairs and piled up in the garage, right behind my Christmas moose. He got blown down last year and broke a hip, so I've got to make him a new one. I also show you my dad's old Wanderers club plate from Lowell, Mass. that hung in his auto body shop and that I restored about 30 years ago.

❓ GARAGE CLEANOUT FAQ
Q: Why does a garage get so cluttered so fast?
A: Life gets away from you. My garage was pretty clean last spring, but between boat season, camping season, boat videos and house repairs, it snowballed in about eight months. Seasonal stuff coming in and out adds up fast.

Q: Where do you store window air conditioners in the off season?
A: In an old house without central air, the window units come out every fall. I've got about five of them, and they get piled up along the side of my garage. They're heavy, so lift carefully and get a hand on the stairs if you need it.

Q: How do you fix a broken wooden yard decoration?
A: My Christmas moose got blown down last year and broke a hip. Lucky for me the front hip is the same as the back hip, so I can use it as a template to make a new one before he goes back outside.

Q: Should you restore old things you find in the garage?
A: Sometimes it's worth it. My dad's old club plate was all worn out from hanging in his auto body shop, so I restored it about 30 years ago and painted it back to the original maroon. Now I might hang it on my T-Bird.

Q: How often should you clean out your garage?
A: There's no set rule, but a change of season is a good time. Mine gets a cleanout in the fall, once the boat and camper are put away and the air conditioners are out of the windows.
