Why Artists Struggle to Fix Their Mindset and Why Advice Alone Doesn't Work

Every artist eventually asks the same question: "Why do I know what I should do... but I still can't do it?" The answer isn't laziness, lack of discipline, or a lack of talent. It's something much deeper. In this video, I share what I've learned after mentoring thousands of artists over the last 30 years, and why changing your mindset isn't about finding better advice, but becoming the kind of person who no longer needs it. If you're ready to stop fighting yourself and start building a healthier creative life, this conversation is for you.

Drawing from my experience as both an artist and an educator, I simply want to help pull back the veil that often obscures certain truths from our view. My hope is that together we can recognize some of the mental barriers that are difficult to see when we're standing too close to them.

I have witnessed these struggles firsthand with my students, but more importantly, I have experienced them myself. I have fallen into this pit many times throughout my career, long before AI ever entered the conversation.

The demonstration that accompanies the video is done with an indigo Prismacolor pencil on printer paper I purchased at Office Depot. It has been sped up to match the length of the audio. The original took around 38 minutes to complete and is just a sketch and not intending to be an instructional video.

All the usual steps I teach that make it easier to learn a process are thrown out for the sake of impromptu painting and just feeling the way through it.

I hope you enjoy this video, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments. If our paths happen to cross at a convention, workshop, or art gathering someday, I'd love to continue the conversation in person.

You should join the Discord channel where there is a great growing community of artists sharing their work and helping each other learn how to make art. They are now meeting once a week doing a live drawing class from images, timing them and having a conversation about what they are doing together. They are definitely inspiring me to continue growing the content and growing the community in whatever way I can. Thank you all for participating and pushing each other, as well as pushing me on.
