אבי וורצל, אמן ויוצר רב תחומי, כתב והלחין את השיר "בחוץ נראה שמח" בתקופת לימודיו ב"בצלאל" בשנות השמונים. בשנות התשעים הקליט את השיר, שהיה לשיר הנושא באלבום שהוציא. מאז לא שמעתי את השיר.
לקראת סוף אפריל 2026, הופתעתי לראות את הצמיחה והפריחה ברחבי המדבר בישראל, נדירה בהיקפה, בוודאי בעונה זו של השנה. כשהלכתי בין הפרחים הצבעוניים הרוקדים ברוח, וצפיתי במרבדים הירוקים, שב והתנגן לי בראש השיר "בחוץ נראה שמח".
לאחר שנים רבות, השיר שב וקיבל משמעות אקטואלית חדשה ועצובה לא פחות:
הטבע בחוץ שמח, אבל נפש האדם בישראל פצועה ושבורה ממלחמות אין קץ.
"בחוץ נראה שמח".

Avi Wurzel, a multidisciplinary artist and creator, wrote the song “On the Outside It Looks Happy” during his studies at "Bezalel" Academy of Arts and Design in the 1980s. In the 1990s he composed the melody, and it became the title track of the album he released. Since then, I hadn’t heard the song for many years.
In late April 2026, I was stunned to see the rare and widespread bloom across the Israeli desert — an unusual sight for this time of year. As I walked among the colorful flowers swaying in the wind and looked out over the green carpets covering the landscape, the song “On the Outside It Looks Happy” began playing in my mind again.
After so many years, the song suddenly carried a new and painfully relevant meaning:
Nature outside is joyful, yet the human spirit in Israel is wounded by endless wars and a broken reality.
