Short caveats
• Different counting rules: “Total aircraft”, “naval hulls”, and even “tanks” are reported differently by different databases (some count stored/reserve/obsolete hulls; others count only in-service units). we used broadly cited public aggregators (Global Firepower / GlobalMilitary / SIPRI / Statista / DMDC) so the two sides are comparable as estimates.
• Effects of the Ukraine war: Russia has suffered combat losses (open-source trackers like Oryx document many losses) but also draws on large Soviet-era stocks and increased production; estimates therefore vary and change quickly.
• Expenditure vs capability: Russia’s spending rose sharply in 2024, but the U.S. still outspends Russia by a wide margin — this funds sustainment, R&D, global presence, and high-end systems.
