US: ~480+ vessels (aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, support, etc.)
Islamic Republic of Iran: +350 vessels (mostly fast patrol boats, missile boats, small corvettes, support ships; few large surface combatants)
• Transparency and openness: U.S. data is relatively well-documented and frequently updated; Iran’s data come from open-source intelligence, defense-analysis reports, and estimations — so numbers can vary, and “on-paper” inventories often overstate operational readiness.
• Quality vs quantity: Even when Iran fields hundreds of aircraft or dozens of submarines, many are older, less capable, or poorly maintained compared to modern U.S. systems.
• What “naval vessels” include: On Iran’s side, “naval vessels” include a large number of small patrol boats, fast-attack craft, and coastal defense ships—not comparable to full-size destroyers, frigates, or blue-water fleets.
