Short interpretation / caveats
• Budgets: SIPRI is the best single source for comparable yearly military expenditure (we used SIPRI plus local reporting for Israel’s large 2024 war spending). Israel’s 2024 wartime spending pushed its annual figures much higher than typical pre-2024 levels. Iran’s official budgets are opaque and analysts often add off-budget spending (oil revenues, special funds) to estimate “true” capacity. SIPRI+1
• Aircraft & fighters: counts differ by whether a source reports only combat-capable jets, all airframes, or includes trainers/transport/helicopters. Israel’s fighter fleet is modern and high-readiness (F-35, F-15, F-16). Iran fields many older types (F-4, F-14, F-5) but has been refurbishing and buying new systems (and expanding drone forces). Reuters and defense databases describe the qualitative gap. Statista+1
• Tanks & AFVs: both countries have significant armored forces, but Iran’s large counts include many older models; Israel’s Merkava tanks are modern and highly protected. Open databases (GlobalFirepower and similar) are useful but show variation between “on-paper” and “operational.” CediRates+1
• Naval forces: Iran’s navy emphasizes many small fast attack/patrol craft and coastal missile units; Israel’s navy is small but technologically capable (subs + missile boats). Numbers vary by counting rules (what counts as a “naval vessel”). AP News+1
