You can now fly nonstop between the United States and Greenland! United Airlines just began a new ambitious route from New York City to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland (pop. 20,113). The island is an autonomous territory of Denmark and has had flights to Copenhagen and Iceland for many years. Only 1 attempt has been made to connect Greenland with the US in 2007 when Air Greenland miserably failed a weekly Boeing 757 flight between Baltimore-Kangerlussuaq.
United is operating this route 2x-weekly during the summer on a Boeing 737 MAX 8, and prices are quite expensive as it’s catered to a middle/upper class adventure-seeking crowd. The $2,757 price tag for Premium Economy is nuts! This is part of a United Airlines initiative to begin unique routes between America and smaller vacation destinations around the world!
Presently there is a strange political climate between Greenland/Denmark and the United States. I hope this route can help calm tensions between each other and promote healthy relations, develop tourism, and build a mutual respect between Americans & Greenlanders.
