Tying the Thorax Adams Dry Fly – Traditional Hackles & Parachute Style

Davie McPhail Guide 2 days ago

Description

In this video, I'm tying the Thorax Adams Dry Fly, a variation of the famous Adams, one of the most recognised and successful dry fly patterns ever created.

I was recently asked if I could tie the Thorax Adams using traditional non-genetic rooster cock neck hackles, as well as showing how the fly can be tied in the parachute style.

Over the years, I've used many different types of hackles, including Chinese and Indian cock necks, long before the genetic capes and saddles we have available today became so popular.

Although modern genetic hackles are excellent, there's still a place for the traditional cock necks, especially when tying practical fishing flies. With a little care in selecting the right feathers, you can still produce some lovely dry flies without having to spend a fortune on expensive capes.

The Thorax Adams is an interesting variation of the original Adams, with the hackle positioned around the thorax to help the fly sit on the water. The parachute style offers another way of presenting the pattern, with the hackle wound horizontally around the wing post, allowing the body to sit lower in the surface film.

Both styles have their place, and much of fly tying is about understanding your materials and making the most of what you have.

Materials Used – Thorax Adams Dry Fly

Hook: Fulling Mill Ultimate Dry, Size 14

Wing: Grizzle Cock Hackle Tips

Tail: A Mix of Ginger and Grizzle Cock Hackle Fibres

Body & Thorax: Natural Light Dun Dubbing

Hackle: Grizzle and Ginger Cock Hackles (Non-Genetic)

I hope this video is helpful, especially to those starting out in fly tying or looking to make use of the older, traditional hackles they may already have.

Thanks for watching, and as always, enjoy your fly tying and fishing.

All the very best,
