Description

In this fly tying video, I'm tying my own version of the famous Swedish Super Pupa (Superpuppan), a wonderfully simple yet highly effective caddis imitation that has earned its place in fly boxes throughout Scandinavia and beyond.

Originally developed by Swedish fly tyer Lennart Bergqvist, the Super Pupa has become one of Sweden's best-known trout and grayling patterns. Its beauty lies in its simplicity, suggesting the natural caddis pupa as it makes its way towards the surface to emerge.

As with so many successful traditional patterns, it's often the simplest flies that prove the most effective. A few carefully chosen materials, the right proportions and a little imagination can make all the difference.

Materials Used;

Hook: Fulling Mill Grab Gape FM5025, Size 14
Thread; Fulling Mill Tan 70 Denier Twisted
Body Hackle, Natural Brown or Furnace Cock Saddle
Body,Cream Coloured Dubbing
Thorax: A mixture of Brown Dubbing, Rusty Brown Ice Dub and fibres from the remaining CDC feathers used in the wing

The Super Pupa is a lovely pattern to have in your fly box, particularly when trout and grayling are feeding on emerging caddisflies. It can be fished on a natural drift or with a little movement to suggest the emerging insect.

I hope you enjoy watching my version of this wonderful Swedish classic and perhaps give it a try yourself.

As always, a huge thank you for watching and supporting the channel. It really is very much appreciated.

All the very best,
Davie McPhail
