Description
The 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has been quietly updated, but Toyota has also raised the price. Is the 2027 Prius PHEV still one of the smartest cars you can buy, or are the changes too small to justify paying more?
In this review, we're looking at the 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid XSE Premium in Reservoir Blue, covering what's new for 2027, Canadian and US pricing, electric range, charging time, fuel economy, performance, interior technology, safety features and driving impressions. We'll also compare the Canadian Prius Plug-in Hybrid with the US-market Prius Plug-in Hybrid, often searched for as the Prius Prime.
WHAT'S NEW FOR 2027?
Toyota has made dual-zone automatic climate control standard across the Prius lineup. In Canada, every 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid also includes a dual-voltage charging cable for compatible 120V and 240V power supplies. The US Prius Plug-in Hybrid already included a dual-voltage cable for 2026, so this is not a new US-market feature for 2027.
The US adds the new Inked black exterior colour and retains the Nightshade grade. Canada does not list the Nightshade Edition for 2027, leaving the SE, XSE and XSE Premium. The 2027 Prius carries over its 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain, 220 hp system output and overall exterior design. This is an evolutionary update rather than a redesign.
2027 TOYOTA PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID PRICES — CANADA
Toyota Canada MSRP before additional charges:
• SE: $41,080 CAD
• XSE: $45,410 CAD
• XSE Premium: $49,160 CAD

• SE: From $44,136.92 CAD
• XSE: From $48,466.92 CAD
• XSE Premium: From $52,216.92 CAD
Compared with 2026 Canadian MSRP, the 2027 SE increases by $1,030, while the XSE and XSE Premium each increase by $625. The Nightshade Edition, introduced for Canada in 2026, is not listed in the 2027 Canadian lineup.
2027 TOYOTA PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID PRICES — USA
US base MSRP, excluding the $1,295 dealer processing and handling fee:
• SE: $33,980 USD
• XSE: $37,230 USD
• Nightshade: $38,000 USD
• XSE Premium: $40,675 USD
Compared with 2026 US MSRP, each grade increases by $205. The US continues to offer the Nightshade Edition, which features black exterior accents and black-finished wheels.
ENGINE, PERFORMANCE AND TRANSMISSION
The 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with electric motor-generators and a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery. Combined hybrid system output is 220 horsepower, delivered to the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT).
Toyota has not announced a new engine, transmission or horsepower increase for 2027.
ELECTRIC RANGE AND FUEL ECONOMY
Canada:
• SE: Up to 72 km of electric range
• XSE and XSE Premium: Up to 64 km of electric range
• XSE/XSE Premium combined efficiency: Approximately 2.1 Le/100 km, including electricity
USA:
• SE: EPA-estimated 44 miles of electric range
• XSE, Nightshade and XSE Premium: EPA-estimated 39 miles of electric range
• SE: 51 MPG combined in hybrid mode and 128 MPGe combined
• XSE, Nightshade and XSE Premium: 47 MPG combined in hybrid mode and 114 MPGe combined
Electric range and fuel economy depend on temperature, driving style, speed, terrain and climate control use. Canadian and US ratings use different testing methods.
CHARGING THE 2027 PRIUS PHEV
The dual-voltage charging cable supports compatible 120V household outlets and 240V charging supplies. Under ideal conditions, Toyota estimates approximately 11 hours for a full charge using a standard 120V household outlet and around four hours using a compatible Level 2, 240V charger.
When the usable battery charge is depleted, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid continues operating as a conventional hybrid. You can keep driving without stopping to recharge.
XSE PREMIUM FEATURES
The Canadian XSE Premium includes 19-inch alloy wheels, SofTex seating, heated rear seats, a 12.3-inch Toyota Multimedia touchscreen, an eight-speaker JBL audio system, a power back door, Advanced Park, Panoramic View Monitor and more. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and Toyota Multimedia are standard.
The US XSE Premium also features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker JBL Premium Audio and a fixed glass roof. Equipment and packaging can vary by market, so check the local specification sheet for the exact vehicle.
THE VERDICT
The 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid retains the combination that made this generation stand out. The updates are modest, with standard dual-zone climate control and market-specific equipment changes rather than a new powertrain.
