# Reinventing the Wheel? I Tested the NEW BMW X5 for 7 Days… BMW Is Onto Something!
The all-new 2027 BMW X5 is here, and after spending an entire week behind the wheel, I think BMW might be onto something BIG.
This is the fifth generation of the BMW X5, the SUV that helped create the Sports Activity Vehicle segment back in 1999. But this time, BMW hasn't just given it a fresh set of headlights and a new bumper. The 2027 X5 brings a completely redesigned exterior, a radically different interior, new technology, an updated powertrain, and some features you probably wouldn't expect to find in an SUV.
But has BMW actually made the X5 better?
In this review, we're taking a detailed look at the new 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive, starting with its bold new exterior design, illuminated kidney grille, double-X headlights, and those unusual new winglet door handles. We'll also check out the new wheel designs, including the massive 23-inch wheels, and find out why BMW decided to get rid of the iconic split tailgate.
Inside, things get even more interesting. The new BMW Panoramic Vision display stretches across the lower windshield, working alongside the massive central touchscreen and optional passenger display. There's a completely different steering wheel design, new interior lighting, updated materials, and plenty of technology. But not everything is perfect, and there are a few things that genuinely bother me.
I'll also be putting the second row to the test as a 6-foot-3 passenger, checking rear-seat comfort, legroom, practicality, and cargo space.
Under the hood, the new X5 40 xDrive gets BMW's updated 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six B58 engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, producing 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. We'll look at the performance, test Launch Control, take it on the highway with Highway Assistant, and see how it handles a U-turn.
And, of course, we'll get into pricing in BOTH Canada and the United States.
