As cartoon explosions go, this is fairly adequate.
A big problem is that you actually almost never see an explosion dissipate in a cartoon. Y'ever notice that? They usually cut away before it finishes... so I more or less had to make up how it looks (with a little help from some reference footage I finally managed to find)...
Took me THREE FRICKIN' DAYS to get this right; there was a lot of fiddling with materials/mapping, timing, and little persnickety ways 3DS MAX can be a pain in the butt... however, I think I got it right in the end.
