Making animation requires a lot of knowledge beyond simply designing characters and making them move.
Lighting is one of the most important and most overlooked aspects of filmmaking; it can show the time of day, it can set a mood, it can make characters more distinct from the background...lighting does a lot.
And when you screw it up, it affects a lot, too.
