In this lesson I'll teach you the Back Porch Shuffle from start to finish. It's a steady-thumb fingerstyle blues in the key of E, where your thumb keeps a rolling bass going while your fingers add the melody and those gritty blues notes on top. One guitar, no band, no singing, just that full smoky blues sound right there in your hands.
The best part is you do not need to play this fast for it to sound great. Fingerstyle blues sounds cool even when you take it slow, so don't rush it. Keep that thumb steady, work through it section by section, and let the groove do the work.
Fun fact: that steady rolling thumb is what players call the "dead thumb" or monotonic bass technique, and it's the heartbeat of delta and Texas blues. One of its all time masters, Lightnin' Hopkins, loved playing in the key of E (the same key as this arrangement) because the open strings let the thumb drone away while the fingers do all the talking. Once you get this feel under your fingers, you've got the foundation of the whole style.
