The Weight is one of those timeless tunes you've heard a hundred times without ever knowing the name. It's been covered by everyone, sung around every campfire, and once that intro kicks in you'll go "oh, THAT song." It's a perfect one to add to your repertoire, and the good news is most of it is dead simple. Basic open chords and a steady strum carry the whole thing, so it's very friendly for beginners.
The fun part is the intro. It's built around a really nice double stop lick that sounds way more impressive than it actually is to play. I'll break it down slowly so even if you're newer to lead-style playing, you can get it under your fingers. It's a great little challenge if you want something more than just strumming, without jumping into the deep end.
Here's a cool one for the guitar nerds. The opening line, "I pulled into Nazareth," is not the one in Israel. It's Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which just happens to be the town where Martin guitars are built. Robbie Robertson said that's exactly what put the name in his head when he wrote it. So this song has had a guitar connection baked in from day one.
