When learning to drive and post test, many people focus too far ahead and spend too long thinking about the wrong things. This can lead to missed information such as road signs, potholes, road markings, junctions, and pedestrians approaching crossings.
The “Sign Game” is a simple exercise I’ve been using with my learners that encourages better visual scanning and awareness of what’s happening around the vehicle — not just far down the road.
By spotting different types of road signs (triangles, circles, rectangles and information plates), drivers begin to move their eyes more naturally around the driving environment. This helps reduce overthinking and improves awareness of hazards, road layout and other road users.
The results have been excellent. Often within minutes you can see a noticeable improvement in how someone reads the road and processes information while driving.
