In this driving lesson in Derby, we worked on building real confidence with speed, braking, and gear control. In reality, good driving isn’t about chasing the “right gear” — it’s about adapting your speed to the environment, and then selecting a gear that supports that.
At the start, the learner didn’t really know what they wanted to focus on — and that’s actually very common.
👉 It’s completely OK not to know- BUT...the learners who can drive independently quickest all do ONE thing differently:
They think and reflect between lessons.
No notes = slower progress. No reflection = same mistakes.
Driving isn’t just done in the car.
But what often slows learners down is not reflecting between lessons. When there’s no clear focus. Honest question 👇
After your last driving lesson… Did you actually think about what you needed to improve? Or did you just turn up to the next one and “see what happens”?
Once we identified that, everything changed.
We focused on: ✔ Braking earlier and more progressively ✔ Giving more time to think and act ✔ Matching speed and gears to the situation ✔ Letting the driving flow instead of rushing it
The result? More control, more confidence, and smoother driving.
