Description
The Mosquito Bowl: Why Football Was Harder Than War. Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Galitzine, Tom Francis, and Ray Nicholson reveal how intense football training, chaotic battle sequences, and director Peter Berg's unconventional filmmaking approach shaped their performances in the 2026 war drama.
In this Collider interview, the cast of The Mosquito Bowl takes us behind the scenes of the physical and emotional challenges of portraying football players thrust into World War II. After spending a month in Australia training for hours each day in both football and military techniques, the actors discovered that recreating the sport could be even more demanding than filming combat.
Skarsgård discusses the challenge of convincingly playing an experienced American football player despite having only weeks to learn the game, while the cast reflects on navigating unpredictable battle scenes, muddy playing fields, and physically exhausting shoots.
The conversation also explores how Berg's spontaneous directing style encouraged the actors to embrace unexpected moments rather than rigidly follow a predetermined plan. From shooting with multiple handheld cameras to allowing performers to follow their instincts, the experience created an unusual sense of creative freedom.
The cast also opens up about the friendships they developed throughout production and how filming chronologically helped those relationships evolve naturally on screen.
