Description
The Mosquito Bowl: How They Built a WWII Ship at Sea. Producer Alex Gayner and writer Buzz Bissinger reveal how Peter Berg's World War II drama brought its ambitious battle sequences to life, including a massive practical filmmaking challenge that required building a 1940s military transport ship on top of a modern tanker.
In this Collider interview, Gayner takes us behind the scenes of The Mosquito Bowl to explain why the production chose to film on the open ocean instead of using a blue screen. From teaching Australian rugby players how to play American football to recreating the military equipment of the 1940s, the production faced challenges at nearly every turn.
Gayner also discusses Peter Berg's unique casting process, working with Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Galitzine, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis, and why shooting almost the entire movie chronologically helped capture the emotional transformation of the young Marines.
Meanwhile, Bissinger reflects on seeing his writing brought to the screen, the importance of preserving the humanity of the real soldiers, and his unexpected opportunity to appear in the film as a Marine drill sergeant.
The pair also discuss their creative history with Berg, the practical filmmaking lessons learned from American Primeval, and why the Mosquito Bowl football game represents a final moment of youthful freedom before the realities of war.
