Description
How does 9-1-1 pull off its massive disasters, collapsing structures, and dangerous stunts? Special Effects Supervisor Elia Popov takes Collider behind the scenes to explain the practical effects and engineering that make the show's biggest action sequences possible.
From dropping a 9,000-pound platform nearly eight times to sending a massive telephone pole crashing precisely into its target, Popov breaks down the technical challenges behind some of 9-1-1's most ambitious sequences. He also reveals how the effects team created convincing lava using practical lighting, steam, fire, and a specially constructed pool before visual effects completed the illusion.
Popov discusses how years of experience working on major action productions influence the team's approach to television, where shorter preparation schedules demand creative solutions and careful planning. He also explains his collaboration with Ritchie, whose experience includes Michael Bay productions, and why combining practical effects with digital enhancements is essential to making these disasters believable.
Beyond the explosions and destruction, Popov shares how his team maintains continuity across multiple filming units, engineers effects for upcoming episodes, and creates atmospheric details that help audiences feel immersed in every emergency.
