Description
The Winter War (1939–1940) was fought between the Soviet Union and Finland after Soviet forces invaded Finland seeking territorial concessions and greater security around Leningrad. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Finnish troops used forests, harsh winter conditions, skis, and mobile tactics to slow and inflict heavy losses on the advancing Soviet armies. Battles such as Suomussalmi became symbols of determined Finnish resistance against a much larger opponent. Although Finland ultimately ceded territory under the peace treaty, it preserved its independence and gained international admiration for its defense. The conflict exposed weaknesses in the Soviet military and became one of the most notable David-versus-Goliath struggles of World War II.
