Description
The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft and one of the most advanced weapons fielded during World War II. Introduced by Germany in 1944, it was significantly faster than Allied piston-engine fighters, allowing it to intercept bombers and evade many opponents. Armed with powerful 30mm cannons and, in some variants, air-to-air rockets, the Me 262 posed a serious threat to Allied air operations. However, chronic fuel shortages, inexperienced pilots, production disruptions, and the deteriorating military situation limited its overall impact. Despite its technological superiority, it entered service too late and in insufficient numbers to alter the course of the war. The Me 262 nevertheless influenced postwar aircraft development and marked the beginning of the jet age in military aviation.
