Description
The Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989) became one of the Soviet Union's most costly and draining conflicts, often compared to a quagmire that strained its military, economy, and political leadership. Years of fighting against determined Afghan resistance, combined with mounting casualties, rising costs, and declining public support, exposed deeper weaknesses within the Soviet system. Although the war was not the sole cause of the Soviet Union's collapse, it intensified existing economic and political problems during a period of major reforms and instability. Following the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, internal pressures continued to grow until the Soviet Union formally dissolved in 1991. The conflict is widely regarded as one of several key factors that accelerated the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet state.
