Description
As Soviet forces closed in on Berlin in 1945, a fierce rivalry emerged between Marshals Georgy Zhukov and Ivan Konev to be the first to capture the German capital. Following the successful Vistula–Oder Offensive, both commanders advanced rapidly toward Berlin from different directions, encouraged by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, who deliberately fostered competition to accelerate the offensive. Zhukov launched the main assault through the heavily defended Seelow Heights, while Konev pushed north after breaking through German defenses farther south. Their armies converged on Berlin in late April 1945, surrounding the city and fighting intense street battles until its capture. The race ended with Soviet victory in Berlin, becoming one of the final and most symbolic campaigns of World War II.
