Description
This Muharram, the First Command Book Club reads two important works that explore the promises and challenges of artificial intelligence: "The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking" by Shannon Vallor, and "Magnifica Humanitas," an encyclical letter by Pope Leo XIV.
Encyclical letters address matters of significance to the wider human community. Throughout history, pontiffs wrote encyclicals on subjects ranging from labor and social justice to environmental stewardship. As communities across the world grapple with the implications of artificial intelligence, this recent encyclical offers an opportunity to consider how one major religious tradition responds to these questions. Muslims, too, must think carefully about the ethical and spiritual challenges posed by emerging technologies and contribute meaningful guidance to the conversation.
At Zaytuna College, we strive to preserve and cultivate natural intelligence. Reading remains one of the most important means by which we do so—and God willing, by which we rise.
Join us as we embark on the sixth year of the First Command Book Club. We hope to see you there.
