Here is how to apply the 1-second rule to gain better control of your puppy:
Stop Repeating Commands: Dogs learn in one second! If your puppy breaks their sit, you must physically guide them back into position the exact moment it happens, rather than nagging them with repeated commands.
Reward Instantly: You are probably waiting too long to praise! The moment your dog gives you eye contact or settles into the correct control position, you have a one-second window to mark that good choice with a positive verbal marker and deliver a treat.
Fast Hands, Loose Leash: Great timing means quickly placing your dog into position and immediately returning slack to the leash, so your dog learns self-control instead of relying on a tight leash.
Recognize Exhaustion: Sometimes bad timing isn't the issue—your dog is just overtired. Learn how to recognize when a hyper puppy needs a break in the crate to settle their brain.
