Jind, Haryana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, describing it as a landmark achievement in the country's journey towards sustainable, clean and future-ready transportation. The launch marks a major step in Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt green technologies while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The hydrogen-powered train is the first of its kind to be developed indigenously in India and is expected to play an important role in reducing carbon emissions from the railway sector. Powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train produces electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour as a by-product. The technology offers a clean alternative to diesel-powered trains and supports India's broader objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
