By 1945, the Pacific War had spiraled into a feedback loop of terror. Japanese propaganda convinced millions that Americans were monsters. Soldiers and civilians alike came to believe surrender meant torture or death. At Okinawa—the last major battle—between 100,000 and 150,000 civilians died, many driven to suicide by fear. Yet when Americans finally occupied Japan, they treated civilians with professionalism and restraint. Wartime fear had shaped a distorted reality on both sides. #simplehistory
