Why the F-14 Tomcat changed everything. In the 1960s, the US Navy faced a problem—their F-4 Phantom II couldn't match new Soviet threats. Faster bombers, longer-range missiles, and the specter of naval combat demanded something revolutionary. In 1970, Grumman delivered the F-14 Tomcat: an aircraft unlike anything else in the sky.
