During WWII, Japanese soldiers followed a military code that saw surrender as ultimate dishonor. This mentality shaped how prisoners of war were treated in Japanese hands. The Bataan Death March, the Burma-Siam Railway, prison camps across occupied territories—each revealed a brutal system where POWs faced starvation, forced labor, and torture. Unlike Western militaries that understood the Geneva Convention, Japanese command often viewed captives as objects without rights. The numbers tell the story: of 27,000 American POWs, over 12,000 died in Japanese captivity. Historical records and survivor testimonies document one of WWII's darkest chapters.
