An 18-year-old was reportedly left on an island without his phone, and the people who left him are the ones who had it. The Nolan Wells story has been weighing on me, and as a doctor trained in both medicine and social psychology, two things keep coming back to my mind. The first is the bystander effect. There were multiple young people on that island who witnessed what appeared to be a confrontation. But the more people present, the less likely anyone feels personally responsible to step in or call for help. That's not just a theory. That's documented social psychology.
The second thing: Nolan Xavier Wells was 18. According to Pew Research, 44% of teens experience anxiety without their phones. The average teen touches their phone 100 times a day. The idea that Nolan chose to stay on that island without his phone doesn't hold up medically, psychologically, or logically. If you saw something, say something.
