The cyclospora outbreak continues to spread, and now Taco Bell has proactively pulled certain fresh ingredients as a precaution while the CDC confirms cases keep climbing across 17 states. Michigan alone just added 170 new cases on top of what was already reported, and the food safety situation around this explosive diarrhea outbreak is not getting better. This teeny tiny microscopic parasite, cyclospora cayetanensis, lives on human feces and hides on fresh produce like lettuce, basil, and raspberries. And here's the part you're not going to like: washing your fruits and vegetables with running water does not get rid of cyclospora. Sorry. You'd need to apply heat, and who really feels like eating boiled salad? Symptoms can take up to 14 days to show up after eating contaminated food. If you're having watery diarrhea, ask your doctor specifically to test for cyclospora.
