We now have a possible source for the cyclospora cayetanensis diarrhea parasite, and it's something most of us eat every week. Michigan's Department of Health believes the likely culprit is lettuce and salad greens. No specific supplier has been named yet, but the pattern is clear. You are not being told to stop eating salad, but here's what is being recommended: skip the prepackaged salad kits and bagged lettuce. Buy a whole head instead, peel back and toss the outer leaves, then wash the inner ones. Washing alone won't kill cyclospora, but it can bring the parasite load down. The only way to actually kill it is heat, at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit. And the real numbers on this outbreak are much bigger than what the CDC is reporting. Michigan alone has logged 2,640 cases and 44 hospitalizations. Ohio has 360-plus cases and 46 hospitalizations. CDC budget cuts ended active cyclospora surveillance in 2025. The state numbers are more accurate right now.
