Description
[High Intermediate] How to fold a Mini Pyramid of Dimes using pure origami. I designed the original full-sized Pyramid of Dimes circa 1991. The full size Pyramid of Dimes is from a 32X32 grid. This mini version is from a 16X16 grid. Hopefully, if you master this mini version you will be able to tackle the 32X32-grid version because it is the same pattern, just more repeated.
As some people have noted in the comments this Pyramid of Dimes is seemingly based on the Multi-Stage Clover Tessellation which is related to Shuzo Fujimoto's Hydrangea Tessellation first published in Oru Magazine in 1994. However, I designed my Pyramid of Dimes independently around 1991 on my own as part of a purposeful effort to make a tessellated stack of coins. I could not find any articles documenting when he actually designed the multi-stage Clover Tessellation, but I would not be surprised if it was long before my discovery, since he was born 51 years before I was. Also, he was the grandfather of twist tessellations, so on some level I was probably influenced indirectly by his work without knowing it.
I have been aware of other YouTube tutorials for the Multi-Stage Clover Tessellation (I see I even commented on Sara Adam's tutorial 14 years ago) and, since publishing this video, I revisited them to compare folding methods. My method of folding it is a bit different and requires a little less precreasing than other videos I've seen.
Besides being a cool looking pyramid of coins, this model also flies as a flicker and it can spin on the tip of a pencil like a fidget spinner. It also makes for a good lid for a waterbomb-sized open-box container. Special for members, I designed and made a tutorial for an aesthetic origami container for which this Pyramid of Dimes serves as a perfect lid. For Membership info, see below.
