Lata was born on September 28, 1929, to classical singer and theatre artist Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Her father started teaching her music at an early age. By the time she was five, Lata was seen participating as an actress in plays written by her father.
In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
She was born as “Hema” in a Marathi speaking family in Madhya Pradesh as the eldest daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and his second wife Shevanti. She was later renamed “Lata” after a character in her father’s play.
She has several younger siblings, of whom sister Asha and Usha are also reputed singers in their own right. Her father began teaching her music when she was a little girl. She was an eager learner and loved to sing.
She was just five when she began appearing in her father’s plays as an actress. She did not go to school for much long, though the reasons cited behind this vary.
Lata mangeshkar is called as the Nightingale of India because of the following important reasons: Lata Didi made a world record by singing more than 30,000 songs during her career . ... She inspired millions of new singers to come in the music industry and also she won millions of hearts through her songs.
Lata recorded the first song of her career “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari” in 1942 for a Marathi movie called Kiti Hasaal. But unfortunately, the song was removed from the film’s final cut.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her last song ‘Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki’, which was composed by Mayuresh Pai, as a tribute to the Indian Army and nation. It was released on March 30, 2019.
