Music Director: Vinod

This is my second video on the song from the movie Anmol Ratan 1950.
Vinod was ONE of the most talented music directors that Punjab everproduced. His real name was Eric Roberts, but he is more familiar with the name Vinod. he was very creative, who produced some of the most soul stirring tunes, but he never got what he deserved in life and in death. He had obtained lessons in composing film music from Late Pandit Amar Nath, had studied to the music of Master Inayat Hussain, and learned as to how Ghulam Haider was composing the preludes and interludes for his tunes.
Lata Mangeshkar was a new find, looking for work, and Vinod gave her three songs to sing. Incidentally, Lata's all three numbers became landmark songs not only for this film but for other Punjabi films to follow. Those were the days of extreme communal tension on both sides of the Radcliffe line in Punjab . As a consequence, after its release, the film did not do well in Pakistani Punjab. But the selling of its music even in Pakistan did quite a decent business.

By 1946, he had started composing music for a number of films, including three Hindi films and a Punjabi film Chaman. However, Chaman could not be taken up due to communal tension in Lahore. It was made in India after 1947, for which Pushpa Hans and Shamshad Begum lent their voices. Vinod gave Lata Mangeshkar three songs to sing. All three numbers became landmark songs. Those were the days of tension on both sides of the Radcliffe line. While the film did not do well in Pakistan, the music of the film did a decent business.

Vinod started composing songs for films in 1946. He composed music for the 1949 film Ek Thi Ladki, which, along with the song Larra Lappa Larra Lappa Layi Rakhda, Addi Tappa Addi Tappa Layi Rakhda became very successful. He moved to Bombay when Roop Kumar Shorey, a producer for whom Vinod had previously composed songs, brought his team there. Vinod composed music for 36 films, viz. 30 in Hindi and 6 in Punjabi language.

The lovers of Punjab and Punjabi language, bow their heads before Vinod for all the great musical compositions he has given to his mother-tongue.
Please enjoy my compilation, I have compiled videos on the songs the way I visualize them.
The words, they are exquisite. The melody, it is simply sublime. And the voice of Talat Mehmood – on listening to this wonderful ghazal, one can understand why his voice is compared with a touch of velvet. Listen and enjoy this vintage Talat sound, and feel the velvet in his voice.
The film ‘Anmol Ratan’, released in 1950, was produced under the banner of Gemini Dewan Productions, Bombay, and directed by M Sadiq. The main stars cast in the film are Meena Kumari, Karan Dewan, Gope, Gulab, Madan Puri, Nirmala etc. The songs in this film are written by DN Madhok, and the music is by Vinod, the wonderful young composer from Punjab. In this film, Talat Saab sang two solo songs and two duets with Lata. Since only the audio of this song is available, I can only make a guess that this ghazal would have been picturized on Karan Dewan.

jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
haaan
hasraten uthh uthh ke
armaanon se takraane lagin
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin

mil gayeen aankhon se aankhen
mil gayeen aankhon se aankhen
bhool se
ya jaan kar
bhool se ya jaan kar
wo bhi sharmaane lagey
haaye
wo bhi sharmaane lagey
aur wo bhi sharmaane lagi
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
aa ke lehraane lagin

dard jo paidaa huaa hai
ae ae
dard jo paidaa huaa hai
dil mein
dil kaise kahe
kaise kahe
dhadkanen dil ki kahaani
dhadkanen dil ki kahaani
dil ko samjhaane lagi
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
