International Viking Day is celebrated each year on May 8, but many people are unsure where the day comes from and what it represents.
In this video, I explain the origin of International Viking Day and why May 8 was chosen as the date. Much of the information is based on a press release published in 2013 by the Øresund Event Center, which helped establish the day as a way to promote Viking heritage, reenactment events, and cultural activities connected to the Viking Age.
The video also touches on how International Viking Day is connected to modern Viking markets, festivals, and living history events across Scandinavia and beyond. These events play an important role in keeping interest in Viking history, crafts, combat, and daily life alive today.
