In 2021, archaeologists discovered four graves dating back to the Viking Age in eastern Iceland, at the farm Fjörður near Seyðisfjörður. The graves were uncovered during archaeological excavations and came as a surprise to researchers, as the area was previously believed to contain no remains older than the 18th century.
During the excavation, archaeologists identified a landslide dated to around 1150 CE that had sealed off parts of the site. This natural event likely preserved the graves and their contents, allowing rare objects to remain undisturbed for centuries.
In this video, I go through what was found, why the discovery matters, and how it changes our understanding of settlement and burial practices in eastern Iceland during the Viking Age.
