Canada’s healthcare system is one of the things politicians love to celebrate. Universal health care is supposed to be the promise that separates Canada from so many other countries.
But what happens when you actually need it?
After my three-year-old daughter was injured in Calgary, we rushed her to the emergency room expecting care, guidance, and help. Instead, we waited for hours in a packed emergency room while people all around us were suffering, nurses were overwhelmed, and we were told there was no doctor available.
This is not an attack on doctors, nurses, or hospital staff. They are being put in an impossible position. This is about leadership, funding, bureaucracy, priorities, and a system that seems to fail Canadians at the exact moment they need it most.
How did a first world country get to the point where families can wait eight hours in an emergency room? Why are Canadians paying so much into the system while hospitals are bursting at the seams? And why are our leaders not treating this like the national crisis it is?
Health care should not be a partisan issue. It should be the one thing every leader, at every level of government, is willing to fix.
