In 2001, Gower’s father, Michael, died of lung cancer at 66 years old. Like many people, he’d started smoking as a teenager and went on to smoke for most of his life.
The first thing Gower did after his father passed was to have a cigarette. “I felt a huge amount of guilt,” he says.
Gower started smoking at the age of 13 and, in his own words, “spent the next 27 years trying to stop”.
For the past 16 years he’s been campaigning tirelessly as one of our ambassadors, helping to drive historic change, including the new Tobacco and Vapes Act. This landmark law has made it illegal to sell tobacco in the UK to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009. It’s a huge step towards a #SmokefreeUK and a future where fewer families go through what Gower’s has.
