Amazing science news 💙
For the first time ever, no women aged 20-24 died from cervical cancer in a 5 year period (2020-2024). Nearly 90% of women in this age group received the HPV vaccine through school and catch-up programmes.
Our research helped establish the link between HPV and cervical cancer, leading to the development of the HPV vaccine. In England, the vaccine has reduced cervical cancer cases by up to 90%.
The latest study provides the strongest evidence yet that HPV vaccination is saving lives. It found that women vaccinated at ages 12–13 have an almost zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before age 30.
While the HPV vaccine offers powerful protection, it's still important to attend cervical screening when invited. Together, vaccination and screening are the best ways to prevent cervical cancer.
Professor Peter Sasieni, lead author of the study, says: "It's amazing news that no women aged 20–24 died from cervical cancer anywhere in England between 2020 and 2024. This remarkable achievement is thanks to nearly 90% of Gen Z women receiving the HPV vaccine through school vaccination and catch-up programmes."
